SURFING ETIQUETTE

Buttons Surf School strongly promotes a healthy fun surf experience, so we promote your understanding basic surfing etiquette before you paddle out. Knowing the basic rules of the surf will help you make sure that your first time out is fun and safe experience with Oahu Surfboard Rentals.

Respect the right of way
Respect the right of way. When there is more than one surfer paddling to catch a wave, the person who has paddled closest to the peak has the right of way for that wave.

Don’t “drop in” on others
Don’t “drop in” on others. Paddling to catch or dropping into a wave while someone is already riding closer to the peak is considered rude and potentially dangerous. Remember to scan the line of the wave for other surfers before you try to catch it.

Paddling out... Do's and Don'ts
Don’t paddle straight through the heart of the lineup where people are surfing. Paddle out in an area where the waves aren’t breaking as consistently and people aren’t surfing. Also, don't ditch your board! The quicker you learn to hang onto your board, the safer you and those surfing around you will be.

Respect the local surfers
Even at crowded surf spots, many surfers have spent years learning the break and its nuances. If you happen to make a mistake and break an etiquette rule, apologize. You will find most surfers are understanding and the goodwill will go a long way towards you having a fun session!

Respect the beach
Everyone deserves to visit a clean and healthy beach! If you bring it to the beach, take it back with you. In Hawaii we say "malama ka 'aina" which means respect the land.

Traveling with your surfboard can be expensive, not to mention a hassle for you and your companions. Why not visit us once you’ve reached our beautiful beach town for our quality Oahu Surfboard Rentals and gear for your stay?
