I highly recommend taking lessons from Buttons, there are other surf lessons out of Chun’s Reef but you will not get the same Aloha feeling and experience as you do surfing with Buttons.
Our family met Buttons last year when we took surfing lessons from the legend and were impressed. We came back to Oahu again and stayed in Waikiki, we drove out to North Shore every day just to be around him and his positive energy and of course more surf lessons, we also did paddle board lessons too this time with his partner Steve and had a blast! I highly recommend taking lessons from Buttons, there are other surf lessons out of Chun’s Reef but you will not get the same Aloha feeling and experience as you do surfing with Buttons.

We had an awesome time!
While visiting family on Oahu, my uncle gifted my siblings and me with surf lessons from Buttons. We had an awesome time! After some quick teaching on the beach, our instructor had us in the water and standing on our boards in no time. Our instructor was so helpful, quickly correcting our mistakes while being extraordinarily encouraging. He was so helpful, too (even towing me back out to sea when I was too tired to paddle myself!). After we’d finished, he took some of our little cousins out to catch a few waves tandem surfing. It was an incredible experience. We’d return in a heartbeat!
My son was thrilled, he could not stop talking about Buttons!
We wanted our 9 yr old son to have the experience of “surfing North shore” we came upon Buttons walking up to the beach. He was so friendly, treated me like a family member. He hugged and kissed me on the cheek. He took my son out for a 2 hour lesson. My son was thrilled he could not stop talking about Buttons and the tricks he had shown him. My son had taken a lesson the day before in Waikiki by a great kid, but it was not a legend! After the lesson was over I had heard that Buttons had taken a group of kids with Cystic Fibrosis out to surf that morning. What a great human being you are Buttons, you gave my son Ryan a life long memory.

We signed our boys up to surf, and so glad we picked this surf school. Buttons and Kala were amazing. They were so knowledgeable, patient and kind, truly professionals. This was the highlight of my kids vacation in Hawaii! Thanks so much!

I’m out here in Hawaii for the first time & my family of surfers said I can’t come home til
I learn how to Surf! My cousin who used to surf out here in the 70′s told me to check out Buttons Surf School & I am so happy I did! Buttons is the best! I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to stand up but he had me up on my first try. It was such a fun day & I can’t wait to keep surfing when I get back to NJ! He is a great teacher, very friendly & makes learning how to surf a super fun experience!

Buttons was awesome!
On our way to Hawai’i a fellow traveler on the final flight suggested Buttons was the perfect instructor for our teenage girls. What an understatement! Buttons was awesome! He instilled confidence in both of them, and both were standing and surfing within two waves. He was a source of inspiration – their biggest cheerleader! When they paddled to a calmer spot, he towed them to the waves to avoid wasting time! We could hear him cheering them on from the beach!! He never let them get far away, and was attentive to both of them the entire time. We knew we could trust him!
If you want an intro lesson that will get you up and going quickly, for a reasonable price, with an instructor who if focused on fun first, and success a close second, this is the guy. You’ll meet a living legend too!
Just got back from my lesson with Buttons. It was amazing!!
I’ve gone surfing on numerous occasions and have failed each time to even stand up half way. I began this lesson with low expectations, I didn’t think I would get up all the way, and if I did, maybe once…. I STOOD UP AT LEAST SEVEN TIMES! Buttons is a great legend who knows everything there is to know about surfing, and within the first 20 minutes he had me on a wave! I’m so glad I made the decision to go with him.. Mahalo Buttons, and I’ll see you out in the water soon for sure!!
