About Buttons

Buttons is a Hawaiian surfer whose energy and radical manuevers in the 70′s made him an innovator of modern day surfing. Buttons is one of surfing’s funniest , most colorful characters and a full blown Hawaiian legend. He shares his surfing lifestyle and aloha with all walks of life including challanged individuals with cystic fibrosis. Buttons has been our offiicial surf school in Hawaii since 2008 and we’re proud to have him in the Mauli Ola ohana.

Validated parking for participants and volunteers at Hyatt Regency self parking garage. Check-in will be at hotel lobby at Maul Ola table and all registered participants are entitled to a “to go” breakfast box.

Buttons Interview coming March 15th

Buttons had an interview at the Olelo Studios for Channel 55 here on Oahu. The station came out to North Shore a few weeks back, and filmed Buttons giving surf lessons, then had him come to their studio and do an interview.

This exclusive interview with the legendary Hawaiian surfer will air on Channel 55, March 15th at 8pm, and 4 Tuesdays following that at 12pm. Set your DVR’s!

North Shore Legends Expression Session

The ASP Pro Junior event at Sunset Beach will be live in Hawaii on Time Warner Channel 250 and a live webcast can be found at asphawaii.org on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013.

“A lot of the best Juniors in the world including Connor and Parker Coffin, Cristobol de Col, Carlos Munoz, Zeke Lau, Keanu Asing and many more will be competing at one of the world’s premiere big wave venues,” said contest director Shane Beschen. “Sunset Beach is renown for being one of the most challenging waves in the Triple Crown of Surfing and the ASP WorldTour. Tune in as the next generation of future surf stars test their skills and find out who will come out on top.”

Expect Beschen, Pancho Sullivan, Larry Bertleman and Peter King to provide colorful commentary the entire day.

Also, aside from top-tier junior surfing at Sunset Beach, there’ll be a legends specialty event featuring Tom Curren, Derek Ho, Richard Schmidt, Reno Abellira and Buttons Kaluhiokalani.

Where to find us in Spring/Summer

When people think of the North Shore, they think of big waves, pro surfers, and surf contests. While the winter months bring the famous swells and waves the North Shore is known for, spring and summer provides smaller waves and plenty of opportunities for beginner surfers to have a fun time in the water with us. Buttons Surf School has two primary locations in spring & summer: Pua’ena Point and Chun’s Reef. Look for our tent and the Buttons Surf School Surf Van. There is about a 5 minute drive between Chun’s and Pua’ena, so if you see us on the beach, we’ll happily guide you to your lesson.

Winter on the North Shore

Winter is my favorite season on the North Shore; the surf is up, the pros are in town, and the whole community comes alive with the stoke of surfing. If you’ve come to the North Shore to surf some of the best waves in the world, including Sunset, Waimea Bay and Rocky Point, I offer special packages for experienced surfers. I’ll personally guide you in the lineup so you can claim the wave of the winter!

Don’t be intimidated by the big waves; there are still plenty of safe places for beginners. Find us at Pua’ena Point in Haleiwa where we give lessons to beginners and first time surfers. Check out these testimonials I received recently:

Where to find us in Fall/Winter

Winter brings the famous swells and waves the North Shore is known for, but there are still opportunities for beginner surfers to have a fun time in the water with us. Buttons Surf School has two primary locations in winter: Pua’ena Point and Chun’s Reef. We have a few Rental Boards on the beach at Chun’s, but most lessons will be given at Pua’ena Point since it is a better spot for beginners. There is about a 5 minute drive between Chun’s and Pua’ena, so if you see us on the beach, we’ll happily guide you to your lesson.

What is unique about Buttons Surf School? You get personal instruction from a Hawaiian former professional surfer. I was born and raised in Hawaii and am proud to call Hawaii and it’s beaches and waves my home. I offer you the experience to surf and learn from my expertise.
